MY Camelopardalis, a very massive merger progenitor

Abstract: Context. The early-type binary MY Cam belongs to the young open cluster Alicante 1, embedded in Cam OB3. Aims. MY Cam consists of two early-O type main-sequence stars and shows a photometric modulation suggesting an orbital period slightly above one day. We intend to confirm this orbital period and derive orbital and stellar parameters. Methods. Timing analysis of a very exhaustive (4607 points) light curve indicates a period of 1.1754514 ± 0.0000015 d. Highresolution spectra and the cross-correlation techniqu… Show more

“…MY Cam A = BD + 56 864 A = ALS 7836 A. SB2E+Cas (previously SB2E). Lorenzo et al (2014) classified this extremely fast and short-period eclipsing binary as O5.5 V + O7 V. In GOSSS III we obtained a similar classification of O5.5 V(n) + O6.5 V(n) which we refine here to O5.5 Vnz + O6.5 Vnz with a lucky spectroscopy observation. Using a LiLiMaRlin epoch we classify the system as O6 V(n) + O6.5 V(n)z.…”

“…This is the second of the two bright stars in the open cluster Alicante1. Hiltner & Johnson (1956) classified it as O6nn and Lorenzo et al (2014) discovered it is an overcontact binary composed of two O stars with a period of 1.1754514days. In the GOSSS data the two components are separated by a Dv of ∼500 km s −1 and we assign them spectral types O5.5V(n)+O6.5V(n).…”

“…Yaşarsoy &Yakut 2013 andZhao et al 2014, respectively). Among the best-studied systems hosting O-type stars are HD 100 213 (= TU Mus, Linder et al 2007), VFTS 352 (Almeida et al 2015), and MY Cam (= BD+56°864, Lorenzo et al 2014). Lorenzo et al (2014) and Almeida et al (2015) note that the components of MY Cam and VFTS 352 appear hotter than one would expect from their masses.…”

“…Our analysis of the light curve of LSS 3074 indicates that this system is a candidate for an overcontact binary. Massive overcontact binaries are important objects as they could be progenitors of merger events or of binary black hole systems (Lorenzo et al 2014, Almeida et al 2015). Yet, only a handful of such systems are known and sometimes the exact configuration (double contact versus semidetached) is controversial (e.g.…”
