NA62 sensitivity to heavy neutral leptons in the low scale seesaw model

Abstract: The sensitivity of beam dump experiments to heavy neutral leptons depends on the relative strength of their couplings to individual lepton flavours in the Standard Model. We study the impact of present neutrino oscillation data on these couplings in the minimal type I seesaw model and find that it significantly constrains the allowed heavy neutrino flavour mixing patterns. We estimate the effect that the DUNE experiment will have on these predictions. We then discuss implication that this has for the sensitivi… Show more

“…Current B factories could also reanalyze data to search for such HNLs using kinematical arguments [143]. The existence of such HNLs can also be investigated in the NA62 experiment [109], the forthcoming FASER experiment [74,144], or the proposed SHiP experiment [145,146].…”

“…To the left we compare the different variants of FASER to each other, while the plot on the right compares FASER R , CODEX-b and MATHUSLA. We also show the projected sensitivity of SHiP [2,59], the expectations for the near detector of the future DUNE experiment [3], denoted as LBNE in the plot, and a recent estimate for the final sensitivity of NA62 [60]. For a description of the NA62 experiment see [4]; for the current status of limits for HNFs from NA62 see [61].…”

“…In future NA62 will be converted to a beam-dump configuration and will be able to probe hadronic decays to N , followed by N decays, up to the D meson mass. The projected sensitivity is |V eN | 2 , |V µN | 2 < 10 −8 for 1 GeV < m N < 2 GeV [88]. A recent recalculation of the impact of sterile neutrinos on kaon decays was conducted in Ref.…”
