Nano-Charged Polypropylene Application: Realistic Perspectives for Enhancing Durability

Abstract: Isotactic polypropylene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (iPP/MWCNTs) films have been exposed to accelerated weathering in a UV device for increasing times. The effect of UV irradiation on the structural and chemical changes has been investigated. The resistance to accelerated photooxidation of (iPP/MWCNTs) films has been compared to the photooxidation behaviour of unfilled polypropylene films with the same structural organization. The chemical and structural modifications resulting from photooxidation have been f… Show more

“…can be integrated into the materials/structures by exploiting the intrinsic electrical characteristics of the materials. Furthermore, the incorporation of nanostructured forms of carbon in polymeric matrices can simultaneously enhance not only the electrical conductivity and self-responsive smart functions, but also other desirable properties, such as thermal resistance, flame resistance, and durability [62,63,64,65,66,67,68,69].…”

“…PP is also often chosen as a matrix for composite materials with various modifiers and reinforcements, such as: glass and carbon fibres, carbon nanotube, mica, talk calcium carbonate, wollastonite and silica. Additives are applied to change or improve physicochemical properties, to increase tensile or flexural strength and the Young modulus, to creep resistance or Polymers 2019, 11, 2018 2 of 14 deflection temperature [5]. Some of this fillers are often used to reduce final material costs as well.…”

“…A similar beneficial effect is found for different polymeric materials, such as Polystyrene-Polybutadiene-Polystyrene (SBS) [1], isotactic polypropylene [25], Poly(ethylene- co -vinyl acetate) [26], polylactic acid [27], epoxy polymer [28,29,30,31], Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) [32] and so forth. Unlike CNT nanoparticles, the effect of graphene on the UV irradiation of nanocomposites is poorly studied in literature and only some paper is present in the literature on this specific aspect, in spite of the relevant interest from a practical point of view.…”
