Nanoparticles to Enhance Melting Performance of Phase Change Materials for Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract: The present study proposes the phase change material (PCM) as a thermal energy storage unit to ensure the stability and flexibility of solar-energy-based heating and cooling systems. A mathematical model is developed to evaluate the PCM melting process, considering the effect of nanoparticles on heat transfer. We evaluate the role of nanoparticles (Al2O3-, copper- and graphene-based nanofluids) in enhancing the performance of the melting process of phase change materials. The results show that natural convecti… Show more

“…The analysis can reveal the effect of particle concentration on the melting process and help identify the optimal concentration for a given application. [ 50 ] Moreover, the outcomes of the analysis have the potential to provide valuable insights into the behavior of the material during phase transition, thereby facilitating the optimization of TES systems, heat exchangers, and heat sinks. Figure 3 shows MF of HNePCM‐1 in the SE with 5%, 8%, 10%.…”

“…Han 51 conducted an experiment by adding 3% volume fraction of Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles to PCM and observed a significant improvement in the melting performance and a 15% reduction in melting time. Zhou 52 investigated the impact of nanoparticles, including CNT, Cu, and Al 2 O 3 , on the melting process of PCM under microgravity conditions.…”
