Nanopatterned Polymer Brushes by Combining AFM Anodization Lithography with Ring‐Opening Metathesis Polymerization in the Liquid and Vapor Phase

Abstract: Nanopatterned polymer structures are fabricated on SiO2 by combining AFM anodization nanolithography (see upper figure) with surface‐initiated ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP, lower figure). This process offers a powerful set of tools for the fabrication of highly functional polymer brushes. The simplicity and speed of anodization lithography promises its massively parallel implementation using anodization stamps. The fabrication approach is universal and can easily be adapted to other surface ini… Show more

“…Unfortunately, our efforts to use the same conditions to polymerize cyclooctatetraene to yield surface-initiated COT-derived polyacetylene (pCOT, Scheme 2) were not very successful. This technique, as well as one previously reported by Lee et al, 17 gave polymer films of only about 2 nm thickness by ellipsometry in our hands. Another report also found COT to polymerize slowly and give little material on the surface.…”

“…Owing to this fabrication method, the limit of resolution for the grafting of functional macromolecular systems consisting single chains in line has been approached. However, the [16] Such pre-functionalized surfaces offer several advantages. For example, the surface can be passivated toward undesired adsorption during the following fabrication steps (e.g., deposition of polymeric species during SIP).…”

“…[ 50 , 54 ] This method, also called " grafting from ", is seen to be effective with the capability of controlling the molecular weight, dimensions, chain confi guration and composition of brushes. Previous examples include nanoshaving with atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), [ 48a ] AFM electro-oxidation with ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), [ 55 ] nanografting with photopolymerization, [ 56 ] and DPN with various SIPs. [ 57 ] Very recently, we developed a new SPL technique, namely dip-pen nanodisplacement lithography (DNL), for programming patterned nanostructures of polymer brushes (Figure 7 ).…”
