Nanoporous Gold Films Created Using Templates Formed from Self‐Assembled Structures of Inorganic–Block Copolymer Micelles

Abstract: A multistep procedure for creating nanohole‐patterned gold films (see Figure) is presented. The steps include the self‐assembly of metal‐loaded polystyrene‐block‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) micelles on GaAs substrates, hydrogen gas plasma treatment, directional reactive ion etching, and gold sputtering. The size and separation of holes resemble that of the gold cluster pattern.

“…[17b] On the other hand, diblock copolymer thin films (less than 100 nm) can be used to control the spatial position of nanoparticles using nanostructured block copolymers by synthesizing the nanocrystal clusters within microphaseseparated domains. Using a polystyrene-block-polyvinylpyridine (PS-b-PVP) micellar solution, ordered Au clusters, [18] Co and Fe arrays, [19] and self-assembly of both Au and Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles, [20] have all been synthesized. High density nanostructures of silicon nitride, GaAs, [21] Au/Cr, [22a] and magnetic cobalt dots [23] have been fabricated using block copolymers as lithographic templates.…”

“…Synthetic routes typically rely upon the use of forced gas bubbling in molten metals [21], the use of suitable templates such as porous alumina [22], and the use of the electrochemical deposition from a liquid crystalline plating mixture [23]. Other methodologies take advantage of self-assembled structures of polymeric frameworks [24] and inorganic-block copolymer micelles [25], and of the chemical and electrochemical etching of binary and multinary alloys [26]. Etching methods, also termed de-alloying, are particularly suited to the fabrication of NP metals.…”

“…Furthermore, self-assembled block copolymer micelles have attracted much interest as functional monolayers due to their ability to form well-defined nanostructures [31][32][33][34]. For instance, Möller and coworkers used metallized block copolymer micelles to fabricate various 2D/3D nanopatterns through lithographical approaches [35,36]. In this paper, poly(4-vinylpyridine)-grafted Au NPs (Au@PVP) and polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-PVP) copolymers were combined to fabricate composite Au thin films.…”
