Nanotechnology and Diagnostic Imaging: New Advances in Contrast Agent Technology

Abstract: Medical imaging technologies allow for the rapid diagnosis and evaluation of a wide range of pathologies. In order to increase their sensitivity and utility, many imaging technologies such as CT and MRI rely on intravenously administered contrast agents. While the current generation of contrast agents has enabled rapid diagnosis, they still suffer from many undesirable drawbacks including a lack of tissue specificity and systemic toxicity issues. Through advances made in nanotechnology and materials science, r… Show more

“…Immunotherapy is another focused choice [21]. By incorporating active and passive target techniques we can improve the efficiency of imaging techniques, allowing for earlier diagnosis and treatment of lethal conditions such as malignant growth [22]. Malignant tumors such as breast cancer, gastric cancer may be metastatic cause and basal cell carcinomas, melanoma, and angiosarcoma can be localized cause [23].…”

“…Nanoparticles are typically used in drug delivery applications because of high drug encapsulation efficiency [35], controlled drug release and incorporation of diagnostic agents [36,37]. One of the major challenges with drug delivery is achieving specificity with cellular uptake.…”

“…SPIO NPs (SPIONs), which have been widely used as the FDA-approved CAs for MRI and are known to have an excellent safety profile [80,81] , were also analyzed for photoacoustic applications. With such NPs, PAI, which enhances the imaging contrast by visualizing the optical absorption of either the tissue or injected CAs, could be coupled with magnetomotive US (MMUS) imaging, which enhances the sensitivity and specificity of US based on the detection of the magnetic NPs perturbed by an external magnetic field.…”
