Abstract:For the Italian laboratories investigated, relevant variability was highlighted for performance of the OGTT in general and GDM screening in particular. A variable relationship between laboratories and diabetes centres was also detected, which might represent a relevant indicator for the need for rationalisation or standardisation of the method for performing an OGTT. These data highlight the need for greater collaboration between these different bodies. We suggest that other similar investigations should be ca… Show more
“…Due to the multiple methods available, the disparity in approach, within and between hospitals and different countries is well documented . Multiple surveys (1990–2014) among countries and within countries like Australia, the UK, Italy, Europe, Sweden and Scotland have found similar differences. The problem highlighted by this study is that not much has changed despite many years of research on GDM with the differences persisting over the last few decades.…”
Although this study is parochial, its implications are global; that is, further education of caregivers would make the discordant approach to GDM (within and between hospitals) more harmonious and improve the obstetric care of pregnant women.

“…Sample size was calculated based on previous study on pregnant woman (5) using the data published population proportion: 20%, expected population with low compliance to OGTT :40%. Calculated sample size is 250(alpha error 5% and power 80%) A semi structured questionnaire was administered to each patient covering all aspects of the protocol.…”

The OGTT is an important tool for the diagnosis of Diabetes mellitus. Patients and clinical staff need to be aware of the potential for misdiagnosis when standard instructions regarding patient conduct before and during the test are not followed. Source of information regarding the protocol is an important aspect considering the complexity of patient preparation involved in Oral glucose tolerance test.
