Native and Prosthetic Valve Staphylococcus capitis Endocarditis: A Review of the Literature

Abstract: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a rare but serious disease. Coagulasenegative staphylococci (CoNS) are among the least prevalent causes of IE. Staphylococcus capitis, a species of CoNS, although described in the literature before has only been seen in a few cases. Even with such few cases, complications and mortality have still been demonstrated. In our review, we look at the epidemiology, diagnosis, management, and literature prevalence of CoNS in native and prosthetic valve IE.

“…The three S taphylococcus species recovered from honeybees ( S. capitis , S. cohnii , and S. warneri ) are all coagulase-negative (CoN) that are not normally dangerous to healthy people as skin commensals. However, all these have been implicated in infective endocarditis and bacteremia, both consisting of serious infections in immunocompromised individuals (Diaconu et al 2019 ; Soldera et al 2013 ; Thakker et al 2021 ), while in neonates, they are included in the most common endemic nosocomial pathogens (Michels et al 2021 ). This is in accordance with the general belief that CoN could be dangerous to sensitive population groups, such as the neonates, elderly, and immunocompromised, when these bacteria succeed to enter the body (Natsis and Cohen 2018 ).…”

“…Staphylococcus capitis frequently is a benign member of the human skin microflora, also found in other organs, for example, the urinary tract and gastrointestinal tract ( 1 ). It is an opportunistic pathogen and has been isolated from neonatal-unit-associated sepsis cases ( 2 ), prosthetic joint infections ( 3 , 4 ), and prosthetic valve endocarditis cases ( 5 ). Antibiotic resistance is of mounting concern, and a recent comparative analysis of S. capitis genomes found that 48% were classified as multi-drug resistant, most notably those strains of the S. capitis subspecies ureolyticus ( 6 ).…”
