Natural Composition and Biosynthetic Pathways of Alkaloids in Medicinal Dendrobium Species

Abstract: Dendrobium is the second biggest genus in the Orchidaceae family, some of which have both ornamental and therapeutic values. Alkaloids are a group of active chemicals found in Dendrobium plants. Dendrobine has emerged specific pharmacological and therapeutic properties. Although Dendrobium alkaloids have been isolated and identified since the 1930s, the composition of alkaloids and their biosynthesis pathways, including metabolic intermediates, alkaloid transporters, concrete genes involved in downstream pathw… Show more

“…D. huoshanense has attracted many researchers because of its broad pharmacological activity [ 9 ]. Our research group on D. huoshanense has carried out a series of studies on the field resource protection, tissue culture and cultivation, chemical component separation and identification, bioactivity analysis and action mechanism, and new drug and product development [ 3 , 5 , 10 , 39 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 ], and also completed its whole genome sequencing [ 54 ]. In addition, the transcriptome sequencing of D. huoshanense had been reported several times in other research groups [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”

“…The research on the biosynthetic pathway mechanisms of the polysaccharides, alkaloids, and flavonoids of D. huoshanense is the main concern of researchers in this field. Although previous studies have described some candidate genes related to D. huoshanense [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 39 ], it is still necessary to find appropriate reference genes for further enhancing the detection of different gene expression levels of D. huoshanense under different experimental conditions by using qPCR.…”

“…D. officinale is a perennial herb in the orchid family that belongs to the Dendrobium genus ( Wang Y et al, 2021 ). It is mainly distributed in the Ta-pieh Mountain of Anhui, Zhengjiang, Guangzhou, Guangxi, Yunnan, and other provinces ( Song et al, 2022b ). D. officinale has considerable effects on immunity and hematopoiesis, as well as anti-oxidation, anti-tumor, anti-fatigue, and hypoglycemic properties ( Song et al, 2022d ).…”

“…For the decades, dozens of alkaloids have been subsequently identified from D. anosmum, D. chrysanthum, D. crepidatum, D. findlayanum, D. friedricksianum, D. hilderbrandii, D. loddigessi, D. lohohense, D. moniliforme, D. parishii, D. pierardii, D. primulimun, D. snowflake and D. wardianum (Morita et al, 2000;Liu et al, 2007;Xu et al, 2013). The alkaloids identified from Dendrobiun plants could be divided into five categories based on their chemical structures, including sesquiterpenoid alkaloids, indolizidine alkaloids, pyrrolidine alkaloids, phthalide alkaloids, and imidazole alkaloids (Song et al, 2022b). Although different types of alkaloids have been isolated from many Dendrobium spp., the composition and biosynthesis of the alkaloids in D. officinale remain unsolved issues.…”
