Natural killer (NK) cells in domestic animals: Phenotype, target cell specificity and cytokine regulation

Abstract: A comprehensive review of NK cells in animals of veterinary medical importance has not been previously published. However, these cells have a high level of immunological/medical relevance due to their role in tumour cell destruction and B-cell regulation, as well as their inhibitory activities against various parasites and bacteria. In the present review, NK cells from agriculturally important animals are characterized. Cell phenotype descriptions have shown that for each species, unique (i.e. non-cross-reacti… Show more

“…A subpopulation of cells that can be rapidly activated and recruited upon viral invasion are NK cells. In most farm animals, the definition of NK cells is difficult due to the lack of specific markers (Evans and Jaso-Friedmann, 1993;Boysen and Storset, 2009;Gerner et al, 2009). Chicken NK cells express surface CD8␣␣ homodimers, but lack surface CD3, T cell receptors, and immunoglobulin (Göbel et al, 1994;Zhang et al, 2012).…”

“…As components of the innate immune response, NK cells do not require previous sensitization to instigate their action (Kiessling et al, 1975; Forsythe et al, 2007). NK cells mediate cellular toxicity (Leavy, 2012) and release chemokines and cytokines involved in combating tumors (Karimi et al, 2008), viral infections (Berahovich et al, 2006), parasites (Evans and Jaso-Friedmann, 1993), and bacteria (Ashkar et al, 2009). Uterine NK cells also release mediators, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and placental growth factor (PGF), which play a major role in the vascularization of implanting embryos during pregnancy (Ashkar et al, 2000; Kalkunte et al, 2008).…”

“…NK cells have been much less characterized in other species, because of the lack of specific cell markers [8, 16, 34]. The generation of an antibody against the bovine NKp46 receptor [38] has led to significant progress in understanding NK cells in cattle [1, 4, 14].…”
