Abstract. An investigation on the current usage status and experience in using Peristrophe bivalvis (L.) Merr. was conducted in the mountainous region of Northern Vietnam. Five varieties were collected and recorded as a source of foodstuff-dyeing and medicinal plants on indigenous knowledge of ethnic minorities in the study area, of which, three varieties were dyed purple, one red and one yellow-orange; with two varieties being used for the treatment of haemoptysis, dysentery, liver disease, kidney failure, and jaundice. Two extraction methods using organic solvents and aqueous solvent were applied to spectrophotometrically investigate the phytochemical contents of Peristrophe bivalvis varieties. Accordingly, the coloration components of Peristrophe bivalvis varieties were contributed by a complex compound of photosynthetic pigments, anthocyanins, flavonoids. Also, the total phenolics, total flavonoids and effect of extraction methods, dissolved solutions (water and methanol) on these contents were assessed. Besides, screening antioxidant capacity of Peristrophe bivalvis varieties was assayed by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method which showed stronger radical inhibition of organic extractions than that of aqueous extractions. The results of determination of phytochemicals and antioxidant capacity support the knowledge and experience in using Peristrophe bivalvis varieties as natural dyeing production for food and pharmaceutical industry.

This study evaluates the in vitro anti-snake venom potential of Peristrophe bivalvis (PB) extracts against Naja kaouthia (NK) and Trimeresurus albolabris (TA) venoms, including inhibition of cytotoxic effects and enzymatic activities, and the binding-precipitation of extracts and venom proteins analysis. In addition, the antioxidant, cytotoxic and in vivo acute oral toxic activities of PB extracts are also reported. The in vitro cytotoxic and enzymatic analysis reveals that the ethanol extracts of stems and leaves of PB showed good anti-snake venom activity against NK and TA venoms. In addition, the antioxidant result indicated that only the ethanol extract of leaves exhibited weak DPPH radical-scavenging activity. The ethanol whole-plant extract of PB also showed no cytotoxicity against four cell lines. Moreover, the in vivo acute oral toxicity result of the ethanol whole-plant extract showed that all treated rats did not exhibit abnormal toxic signs or deaths.

ABSTRAKNoja (Peristrophe bivalvis) adalah tumbuhan sumber pewarna alami yang potensial dikembangkan di Indonesia. Ekstrak daun noja dapat mengalami kerusakan karena teroksidasi selama penyimpanan. Penambahan asam tanat, asam tartarat, dan asam sitrat diharapkan dapat menghambat terjadinya hal tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan asam tanat, asam tartarat, dan asam sitrat terhadap kecepatan kerusakan ekstrak daun noja akibat oksidasi. Indikator kerusakan dinyatakan sebagai perubahan absorbansi ekstrak terhadap waktu. Pengamatan pada penelitian ini dipercepat dengan menambahkan hidrogen peroksida. Asam tanat, asam tartarat, dan asam sitrat pada berbagai variasi konsentrasi ditambahkan ke dalam larutan ekstrak daun noja, diikuti dengan penambahan 1% (v/v) hidrogen peroksida 30%. Pengukuran absorbansi dilakukan setiap 30 menit. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa penambahan asam tanat, asam tartarat, dan asam sitrat, memberikan kenaikan nilai absorbansi larutan terhadap waktu sebesar 2 -3%; 20 -26% dan 23 -26%, sedangkan tanpa penambahan asam (blangko) memberikan kenaikan sebesar 24%. Hasil tersebut menunjukan bahwa penambahan asam tanat dan asam tartarat dapat menghambat reaksi oksidasi.
