Moringa oleifera (Moringaceae) is a medicinal plant rich in biologically active compounds. The aim of the present study was to screen M. oleifera methanolic leaf (L) extract, seed (S) extract, and a combined leaf/seed extract (2L : 1S ratio) for antidiabetic and antioxidant activities in mice following administration at a dose level of 500 mg/kg of body weight/day. Diabetes was induced by alloxan administration. Mice were treated with the extracts for 1 and 3 months and compared with the appropriate control. At the end of the study period, the mice were euthanized and pancreas, liver, kidney, and blood samples were collected for the analysis of biochemical parameters and histopathology. The oral administration of the combined L/S extract significantly reduced fasting blood glucose to normal levels compared with L or S extracts individually; moreover, a significant decrease in cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine, liver enzymes, and oxidant markers was observed, with a concomitant increase in antioxidant biomarkers. Thus, the combined extract has stronger antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant properties than the individual extracts. The histopathological results also support the biochemical parameters, showing recovery of the pancreas, liver, and kidney tissue. The effects of the combined L/S extracts persisted throughout the study period tested. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report on the antidiabetic, antioxidant, and antihyperlipidemic effects of a combined L/S extract of M. oleifera in an alloxan-induced diabetic model in mice. Our results suggest the potential for developing a natural potent antidiabetic drug from M. oleifera; however, clinical studies are required.

Managing diabetes is challenging due to the complex physiology of the disease and the numerous complications associated with it. As part of the ongoing search for antidiabetic chemicals, marine algae have been demonstrated to be an excellent source due to their medicinal properties. In this study, Ulva reticulata extracts were investigated for their anti-diabetic effect by examining its inhibitory effects on α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and DPP-IV and antioxidant (DPPH) potential in vitro and its purified fraction using animal models. Among the various solvents used, the Methanolic extract of Ulva reticulata (MEUR) displayed the highest antidiabetic activity in both in vitro and in vivo; it showed no cytotoxicity and hence was subjected to bioassay-guided chromatographic separation. Among the seven isolated fractions (F1 to F7), the F4 (chloroform) fraction exhibited substantial total phenolic content (65.19 μg mL−1) and total flavonoid content (20.33 μg mL−1), which showed the promising inhibition against α-amylase (71.67%) and α-glucosidase (38.01%). Active fraction (F4) was further purified using column chromatography, subjected to thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and characterized by spectroscopy techniques. Upon structural elucidation, five distinct compounds, namely, Nonane, Hexadecanoic acid, 1-dodecanol, Cyclodecane methyl, and phenol, phenol (3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl) were identified. The antidiabetic mechanism of active fraction (F4) was further investigated using various in vitro and in vivo models. The results displayed that in in vitro both 1 and 24 h in vitro cultures, the active fraction (F4) at a concentration of 100 μg mL−1 demonstrated maximum glucose-induced insulin secretion at 4 mM (0.357 and 0.582 μg mL−1) and 20 mM (0.848 and 1.032 μg mL−1). The active fraction (F4) reduces blood glucose levels in normoglycaemic animals and produces effects similar to that of standard acarbose. Active fraction (F4) also demonstrated outstanding hypoglycaemic activity in hyperglycemic animals at a dose of 10 mg/kg B.wt. In the STZ-induced diabetic rat model, the active fraction (F4) showed a (61%) reduction in blood glucose level when compared to the standard drug glibenclamide (68%). The results indicate that the marine algae Ulva reticulata is a promising candidate for managing diabetes by inhibiting carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes and promoting insulin secretion.

Medicinal herbs databases have become a crucial part of organizing new scientific literature generated in medicinal herbs field, as well as new drug discoveries in the information era. The aim of this review was to track the current status of medicinal herbs databases. Search for finding medicinal herbs databases was carried out via Google and PubMed. PubMed was searched for papers introducing medicinal herbs databases by the recruited search strategy. Papers with an active database on the web were included in the review. Google was also searched for medicinal herbs databases. Both retrieved papers and databases were reviewed by the authors. In this review, the current status of 25 medicinal herbs databases was reviewed, and the important characteristics of databases were mentioned. The reviewed databases had a great variety in terms of characteristics and functions. Finally, some recommendations for the efficient development of medicinal herbs databases were suggested. Although contemporary medicinal herbs databases represent much useful information, adding some features to these databases could assist them to have better functionality. This work may not cover all the necessary information, but we hope that our review can provide readers with fundamental concepts, perspectives and suggestions for constructing more useful databases.
