Natural Products as a Source of Potential Cancer Chemotherapeutic and Chemopreventive Agents

Abstract: Recent advances in the chemistry of novel bioactive natural products are reported. This research is directed to the exploration of plants with confirmed activity in bioassays designed to detect potential cancer chemotherapeutic and chemopreventive agents. Structural work and chemical studies are reported for several cytotoxic agents from the plants Annona densicoma, Annona reticulata, Claopodium crispifolium, Polytrichum obioense, and Psorospermum febrifugum. Studies are also reported based on development of a… Show more

“…Some sesquiterpenes and diterpenes are known to be cytotoxic and to inhibit tumors, with toxic sesquiterpenes generally containing one or more functional alkylating groups which suggests that they are possibly mutagenic and carcinogenic (Cassady and Baird, 1990;Wall et al, 1998).…”

“…[2][3][4][5] Though no plant derived compound has been found to compete with clinically used antibiotics, to date, the great structural variety found in plants makes them attractive as a source of novel lead compounds. In fact, higher plants frequently exhibit significant potency against human bacterial and fungal pathogens.…”

“…[1][2][3][4] Therefore, many efforts have been dedicated to search for reactions that can furnish homochiral α-tetralols. There are several reports dealing with the asymmetric hydrogenation of the α-tetralone itself, [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] as well as with its bioreduction, using either isolated enzymes or microorganisms.…”
