The aim of the study is to determine the role of multimedia technologies used in architecture for socially significant communication. It is important to answer the following question: Can the content and graphic shapes included in the façade be used to shape public awareness and create social identity? One of the objectives is to examine the marketing potential of a message included in an image on a façade, and the possibilities of using it in building a region's brand. Design/methodology/approach: The examination included 15 buildings in which various multimedia technologies were used with the intention to create a message. Among the solutions applied in these objects are those in which the message is composed directly, by a metaphor, or indirectly in combination with the architectural features. The research material was analysed, and groups of useful subjects were selected for further investigation: -Promotion of a town.-Accentuating the location.-Accentuating the importance of events.-Popularisation of art.-Façade as a display and information channel. Findings: groups of subjects were selected, which might be used in creating social integration and regional marketing. Research limitations/implications:The below research is of preliminary character. In next steps, other aspects could be added, e.g. multimedia technologies, or seeking means of expression, methods of building images. Practical implications: The article presents the possibilities that multimedia systems offer in the area of message creation. It could potentially give direction to decision-makers with regard to their marketing activities, or the efforts to accentuate certain public functions of a town or region. The results of this research may interest investors, architects, and artists. The anticipated effect is that both awareness and the frequency of using multimedia systems will grow. Social implications: The article discusses the questions of the social role of art and façade graphics in architecture. It examines the effects of a message contained in an image on the issues of social identity and developing bonds. Originality/value: The study proves that façade graphics have a substantial impact, and it shows the possibilities of using such graphics in regional marketing; it also mentions their form, scope, and means.

Within the EU cohesion policy, higher and lower developed regions, taking into account only GDP per capita, are subcategorised. Based on that, areas qualifying for obtaining support from aid programs of the general EU budget are established. The aim of the article is to attempt to specify the co-dependency between the absorption of EU funds and the changes in the level of socio-ceonomic development in the regional dimension. The research was conducted at the level of 95 NUTS-3 units in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia in three stages. In the first stage, the level of the development of the subregions in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia is exhibited, subcategorising three factors of that growth based on 31 indicators: “the society”, “the economy”, or “the natural environment”. In the second stage, the variation in the absorption of EU funds in the researched units is demonstrated. In the third stage, the co-dependencies between the extent of the absorption and the changes in the development within the arrangement of the factors of that development are specified. In the article, a hypothesis is verified according to which the absorption of the EU funds impacted, above all, the development of “the economy” component. As a result of the examination conducted, it has been concluded that the absorption of EU funds impacted the changes in the level of the development of the “economy” sector to the largest extent. It confirms the proper direction of the EU fund intervention, which was made accessible above all to the benefit of the development of that factor.

A very important research problem is the specification of the level of the socio-economic development of the EU regions. Within the cohesion policy, one may differentiate between regions more and less advanced in terms of general development, including the worth of GDP per capita. Following that measure, one can establish the areas eligible for getting help from EU budget support programmes. The purpose of the article was to present the variation in the level of the socio-economic development of 28 EU countries within the 1,347 NUTS-3 units. The level of the development was established on a multilevel basis, subcategorising three factors of regional development: human capital, the natural environment and the economy. The article specifies the extent of the NUTS-3 unit general progression following the analysis of 31 indicative measures structured around publicly available Eurostat statistical data (as of 2019). The extent of the progression was demonstrated based on a synthetic measure revealing the taxonomic distance of a particular region from the assumed arrangement measuring the development. The research procedure consisted of five development levels, namely: the establishment of factors of the progression of regions, a choice of variable factors, a decrease in the multi-factor space, an identification in the extent of the social and economic progression of the researched units and a subcategorisation of the units on the scale of the social and economic progression structured around a ranking prepared using the analysis of a lowering synthetic measure. The research resulted in spatial variation of 1,347 NUTS-3 unit subregions in 28 EU states presented in terms of the level of the social and economic progression and the three subparts of the progression. The highest synthetic measure was noted in the areas including the capitals of the states included in the research and in a belt comprising the Irish subregions, Central England, the Benelux states, Western and Southern Germany, up until the Alpine subregion. Moreover, significant differences between the levels of the development within the respective states were presented. The results of the research may be a source of inspiration for EU institutions within the scope of the manner of specifying the richest and the poorest EU regions, whose purpose is to ensure the efficient introduction and conclusion of the cohesion policy in the programming periods specified.
