Natural S-equol decreases bone resorption in postmenopausal, non-equol-producing Japanese women

Abstract: These findings suggest that 10 mg/day of natural S-equol supplementation contributes to bone health in non-equol-producing postmenopausal women without adverse effects.

“…98 In addition, it was also believed that the difference in ability to produce equol between equol producers and nonequol producers is mainly based on the interindividual differences of the intestinal bacteria. 92 A 2-year study also showed that equol-producing intestinal bacteria had no benefit in women who were equol producers. Only women whose 25-hydroxyvitamin D baseline levels were <20 ng/ mL had a smaller rate of spinal bone loss in those receiving SI treatment compared with the placebo group.…”

“…91 Equol is not produced in all healthy humans as only 30-60% of the population can produce equol, and production is higher among Asians and vegetarians. 92 Equol and O-desmethylangolensin (ODMA) producers were defined as those people with detectable equol (87.5 ng/mL or 362 nM) and ODMA (87.5 ng/mL, or 399 nM) in their urine. 93 Equol possesses more estrogen-like proteins than DAN and plays a crucial role in the soy phytoestrogen efficacy.…”

“…Isoflavones are one of the phytoestrogens that are possible preventive factors in several hormone-dependent cancers such as prostate cancer and breast cancer (Zhu et al, 2011;Khan et al, 2012 ), cardiovascular disease (Wong et al, 2012;Usui et al, 2013), menopausal symptoms (Aso et al, 2012;Jenks et al, 2012), and osteoporosis (Scheiber et al, 2001;Tousen et al, 2011). Especially, genistein and daidzein, which are aglycones of isoflavones, were found to have potential roles in the prevention of prostate cancer (Akaza et al, 2004;Nagata et al, 2007;Gardner et al, 2009).…”

“…Among these, five were published in Chinese and no translation into an EU language was available (Dong et al, 2008;Gao et al, 2006;Xin and Yang, 2006;Ye et al, 2006;Yi and Shu, 2004), one was of three months duration (Uesugi et al, 2003), one was conducted in pre-menopausal women (Anderson et al, 2002), one primarily (85 % of subjects) in males (Newton et al, 2006), one used an isoflavone metabolite (S-equol) as intervention (Tousen et al, 2011), and one was a single-arm, open label, uncontrolled study (Scheiber et al, 2001). The Panel considers that no conclusions can be drawn from these studies for the scientific substantiation of the claim.…”
