Natural Tooth Pontic: An Instant Esthetic Option for Periodontally Compromised Teeth—A Case Series

Abstract: Sudden tooth loss in the esthetic zone of the maxillary or mandibular anterior region can be due to trauma, periodontal disease, or endodontic failure. The treatment options for replacing the missing tooth can vary between removable prosthesis, tooth-supported prosthesis, and implant-supported prosthesis. Irrespective of the final treatment, the first line of management would be to provisionally restore the patient's esthetic appearance at the earliest, while functionally stabilizing the compromised arch. “…Tooth loss due to trauma, periodontal disease, and failed endodontic therapy in the esthetic zone creates a challenging situation to the dentist and requires immediate treatment due to the psychological and esthetic demands of the patient. [ 6 ] When the tooth is planned for extraction due to periodontal disease in the anterior region, the primary concern is esthetics. Due to increased esthetic demands from the patient, the dentist relies on esthetic principles while operating in esthetic areas considering patients' economic status.…”

“…The immediate bonding of a natural tooth to adjacent elements presents a low-cost alternative for direct tooth replacement [6,[17][18][19]; this technique enables the original tooth anatomy to be replaced, providing excellent function and esthetics (size, shape, and color) at the same time. Use of patient's own tooth as pontic represents a conservative restorative solution with no laboratory procedures involved; it is well-suited for patients who ask for an immediate replacement of a hopeless tooth in the esthetic zone [20,21] and are not candidates for implant therapy. The use of a natural tooth as pontic (NTP) provides promising results by means of a combined application of fiber-reinforced materials and adhesive technologies.…”

“…The extraction of these teeth causes aesthetic, phonetic and functional difficulties, pathological migration in the teeth and psychological problems in patients. 2 Urgent restoration of anterior aesthetic and functional requirements and treatment with minimal preparation that will cause minimal damage to the underlying dentition is important for patients. Current treatment options; removable temporary acrylic prostheses, dental prostheses used extracted tooth as abutment, fiber-reinforced adesive bridges, conventional metal and ceramic fixed partial prosthesis, and implant supported prostheses.…”
