Costs and benefits of landscape‐based water retention measures as nature‐based solutions to mitigating climate impacts in eastern Germany, Czech Republic, and Slovakia

In eastern Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, historic policies led to large, monocropped agricultural landscapes resulting in degradation of traditional landscapes. In the last 20 years, the expansion of urban and industrial areas has added to this degradation. The growing interest in nature‐based solutions, including water‐retention measures, is a response to reversing landscape degradation, rejuvenating ecosystem services, and mitigating the impacts of large‐scale commercial agriculture and climate change. In this study, the costs and benefits of water‐retention measures in eastern Germany, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia are assessed. Results indicate that water‐retention measures offer increased water availability over all land use classes assessed, help increase crop productivity, and aid in landscape cooling. Croplands are suggested as being the best value for money, offering the greatest volume potentials (mean = 88 million m3), cooling effects (mean = −1.6°C), and productivity gains (mean = €66 million yr−1), while also being the cheapest to implement per unit area. Differing policies in the three states will likely result in non‐uniform selection or implementation of measures. Future work should focus on local‐level studies offering greater practical messages beyond the regional‐level analysis conducted here. This work contributes to the growing body of literature assessing the costs and benefits of water‐retention measures, including the potential for landscape cooling, lowering temperature gradients, and ecosystem restoration. As the world urbanises, and as more land is converted to homogeneous cropland, such measures may prove critical in mitigating climate change, landscape drying, flood runoff, and soil and nutrient loss.

Currently, grassland ecosystems' stability is facing severe challenges due to climate variability and the increased frequency and intensity of extreme droughts. In many grasslands worldwide, closed‐basin ponds supply various ecosystem services by collecting rainfall and runoff. These ponds may provide a significant opportunity to mitigate climate change pressures and improve the resilience of grasslands. Nevertheless, their conservation is hampered by problems auditing these small and dynamic features. Understanding the dynamics that characterise the interactions of ponds and grassland vegetation with climate changes is, therefore, a priority for better quantifying future impacts of climate change on managed‐land systems. This study investigated variations of grassland vegetation quality from 2001 to 2021 in Lessinia Regional Park, a pre‐alpine historical rural landscape in northern Italy. We combined multi‐source data, weather information, and satellite‐derived vegetation quality indices. The work focuses the analysis using a ‘pond landscape dominance’ index, calculated as a proxy of hydrologic connectivity, to illustrate the function of ponds in regulating vegetation. We provided an unprecedented mapping of 459 ponds across the whole area. The results show a progressively decreasing vegetation quality in Lessinia, following rainfall and temperature variability. Overall, however, the analysis highlighted the benefit of water extent and closeness to ponds in providing higher resistance of grasslands against drought, especially during the driest study years. These results demonstrate that this approach has great potential for monitoring the resistance of grasslands in response to drought over large regions. This study supports the importance of identifying multiple co‐benefits and ecosystem services related to ponds, which can help communities cope with climate change and environmental challenges.

This research paper focuses on implementing two Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in the Sarantapotamos river basin upstream of Magoula settlement, evaluating their effectiveness through flood hydrograph calculations before and after NBS, and under future climate scenarios, encompassing lower, mean, and upper conditions representing ± 95%. The study area covers an area of 226 km2 in Attica, Greece, susceptible to extreme flood events. The research contributes to NBS knowledge, emphasizing flood resilience and protecting settlements downstream. Land cover change and retention ponds, applied individually and combined, serve as NBS approaches. Flood hydrographs are calculated using the time–area (TA) diagram method in a geographic information system (GIS) with the Hydrological Engineering Center’s Hydrological Modeling System (HEC-HMS). Results demonstrate NBS effectiveness in current climate conditions, reducing peak discharge by 9.3% and 28% for land cover change and retention ponds, respectively. The combined NBS achieves a 40.5% peak discharge reduction and a significant 15.7% total flood volume decrease. Under climate change scenarios, impacts on design precipitation and flood hydrographs vary. The upper climate change scenario exhibits a 3348% increase in peak discharge and a 600% rise in total flood volume, while the lower scenario sees a 44.6% reduction in total flood volume. In the mean climate change scenario, land cover change and retention ponds reduce peak discharge by 9.73% and 23.11% and total flood volume by 9.25% and 2.17%, respectively. In conclusion, retention ponds show substantial peak discharge reduction, while land cover changes extend the time to peak, emphasizing their potential in flood risk management.
