“…Yet, evidence suggests that (1) carbon offset potentials of NbS-based actions are often overestimated, and (2) the assumed ecological co-benefits of increasing carbon stocks are often incorrect and could result in biodiversity losses and degradation rather than restoration (Bond et al, 2019;Seddon et al, 2020). While best practices for equitable and just NbSs have been discussed in the context of water (Bremer et al, 2021), the potential for non-linear dynamics of NbS interventions in carbon markets have, to our knowledge, not been unpacked. The emphasis on carbon offsetting as a key intervention to avoid climate tipping points has led to proposals that aim to enhance aboveground carbon across numerous biomes in the Global South.…”

“…It is important that NbS projects curate intentional gender equity and not simply gender diverse participation, this in order to be gender transformative with the ultimate aim to change the underlying root causes of gender inequalities (IGWG, 2017). This requires women and gender diverse individuals to be engaged in decision-making roles to account for gender specific outcomes (Bremer et al, 2021). Spontaneous empowerment will not occur, but rather empowerment within NbS can be cultivated utilizing protocols and tools that are sensitive to gendered perspectives from the outset.…”

“…Demand for water is rising owing to rapid population growth, urbanization and increasing water needs from agriculture, industry, and energy sectors. While realizing water security, NbS can help achieve multiple other SDGs sub-goals, such as "poverty eradication" (SDGs-1, the role of water on livelihoods), "zero hunger" (SDGs-2, and NbS provides sustainable water for agriculture) and other goals (SDGs-3, Good Health and Wellbeing; SDGs-6, Clean Water and Sanitation; SDGs-11, Sustainable Cities and Communities; SDGs-13, Climate Action) (Bremer et al, 2021). Sustainable city construction advocates the return of urban areas to nature and provides habitats for plants and animals, the urban heat island effect can be improved by planting trees, and the construction of roof gardens, campus green space and large urban parks can reduce the energy required for the environment.…”
