NDT methods in artwork corrosion monitoring

Abstract: The interaction of materials with the atmosphere has recently received increased attention. Although the interaction between atmosphere chemistry, weathering and pollutants deposition is complex, there is a need for measuring the surface materials lost through weathering and acid rain by art objects. In fact, data regarding material response to different conditions can be used to predict long-term trends in degradation as well as to assess deterioration process parameters. Conventional inspection techniques, s… Show more

“…The samples in this experiment were seriously rusted, and the scientific analysis and the detection of components and rusty decay products were able to identify the cause of iron anchor corrosion and the degree of rust, to provide a scientific basis for subsequent protection and restoration [17][18][19]. First, the digital image collection of cultural relics samples was conducted and the disease map was drawn.…”

“…Over recent years it has been increasingly used for the detection of subsurface features in cultural heritage (Carlomagno et al, 2005;Gavrilov et al, 2014;Ibarra-Castanedo et al, 2017;Paoloni et al, 2020), such as ancient books (Mercuri et al, 2013;Mercuri, Bonora, et al, 2018), paintings (Ambrosini et al, 2007;Blessley et al, 2014;Tortora et al, 2016) and mosaics (Theodorakeas et al, 2015), characterized by different physical or structural properties with respect to those of the surrounding material. The presence of such features affects the resulting local thermal front propagation within the sample and, consequently, the correspondingly detected PT signal, thus making it possible to carry out depth-resolved quantitative characterizations.…”

“…Some advantages of ITWNDT as intuitive test results, single-sided testing, non-contact, large area detection and quantitative detection were successfully applied in the aerospace, power generation, automotive, construction and other fields [5]- [10]. S. Marinetti [11]- [12], E. Grizato [13]- [14], D. Ambrosini [15], M. Jonsson [16] and Yang Jing [17] studied the application of ITWNDT in corrosion detection, and achieved relatively good results. Notwithstanding this, the influence factors in the thermal Wave NDT are still not completely exploited.…”
