Neck circumference is independently associated with metabolic syndrome in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract: Recent compelling evidence has shown that neck circumference (NC), as a reliable and convenient anthropometric index, has better predictive values of hyperuricemia and insulin resistance in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) compared with traditional anthropometric measurements. Since both PCOS and metabolic syndrome (MetS) share similar characteristics and affect long-term health of women, we conducted this cross-sectional study to explore the correlation of NC with MetS and metabolic risk factors. A… Show more

“…Metabolic abnormalities such as hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and obesity are often present in PCOS women ( Liu et al, 2022 ). Recent studies have used the measurement of the waist-to-hip ratio of PCOS patients as a simple, cheap, non-invasive, available method to establish the amount of visceral obesity.…”

“…Recent studies have used the measurement of the waist-to-hip ratio of PCOS patients as a simple, cheap, non-invasive, available method to establish the amount of visceral obesity. Measuring the neck and arm circumference in PCOS patients as an anthropometric parameter representing the upper body’s subcutaneous adipose tissue can also be an innovative tool for screening abdominal obesity distribution, which reflects abdominal obesity and metabolic disorders ( Liu et al, 2022 ; Yang et al, 2021 ). The results of the present study also show that patients with excessive adiposity (AO) have more upper-body obesity (around the neck and arms), which worsens hyperandrogenism.…”

“…Where the data were reported in quartiles and/or in the form of median and range, conversion was done for suitable use in meta-analysis [16,17]. In case of any inadequate data while combining the quartiles, the quartile with missing data was not included [9]. A quality score evaluation for studies was carried out according to Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) for observational studies [18].…”

“…Though the associations of BMI in PCOS are well documented [4], the evidence on the association of NC in PCOS is limited with conflicting results [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Therefore, to obtain more precise and valid information on the association of NC in PCOS, this systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted on studies involving reproductively aged adolescent and adult women (population) with PCOS (exposure) and non-PCOS controls (comparator) evaluating the NC values (outcome).…”

“…In the context of PCOS, elevated insulin levels stemming from IR can further complicate metabolic issues, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes, and aggravate PCOS symptoms by promoting increased androgen production. Additionally, IR is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome among PCOS patients, underlining its significance in the broader spectrum of metabolic dysfunction [10,11].…”
