“…wound healing [8,9,12,13], scleral blanching [6,19] and melting [20][21][22][23], and corneal per foration in cases of pterygium and late infec tion due to filtering bleb with avascular and thin walls [13,14], necrotizing keratitis [24] and persistent hypotonic maculopathy [25][26][27][28] because of overfiltration in the case of glaucoma.…”

“…The recurrence of GP observed with MMC alone was 57.1% with a postoperative follow-up period of 12-18 months [24]. MMC-related complications, e.g., ocular discomfort, eyelid erythema, corneal epithelial defects, corneal and scleral melting were reported [33][34][35]. No recurrence of GP was seen when AMT was used alone after resection but an exacerbation of VKC symptoms was seen in 69.2% of cases over a follow-up period of 14.2 +/− 4.2 months [26].…”

“…When MMC is fully applied, the wound cannot be repaired because of cell death and the recurrence of the disease may be impeded. However, application of excess MMC will cause cell death in a broad and deep range of the ocular tissue and side effects may occur such as hypotonic maculopathy [6,9,13,14] due to overfiltration, necrotizing keratitis [15] and late infection [16] due to thin filtering bleb and so on after glaucoma surgery. Scleromalacia after pterygium resection as previously reported [17] is also considered to result from the same mechanism as mentioned above.…”
