Need, equity, and accountability

Abstract: We report the results of a vignette study with an online sample of the German adult population in which we analyze the interplay between need, equity, and accountability in third-party distribution decisions. We asked participants to divide firewood between two hypothetical persons who either differ in their need for heat or in their productivity in terms of their ability to chop wood. The study systematically varies the persons’ accountability for their neediness as well as for their productivity. We find tha… Show more

“…As recent research has pointed out (see, e. g., [18,19]), needs are not only relevant for normative reflections, but have also been the subject of numerous empirical studies. Think, for example, of early empirical social choice (see, e. g., [20]) and what followed from it (for a review, see [21]).…”

“…Information on the potential neediness of individuals appears to raise allocations. Subjects with higher needs receive larger shares of the resource in hypothetical decision situations (Bauer et al, 2022 ; Gaertner & Schokkaert, 2012 ; Konow, 2001 ; Yaari & Bar-Hillel, 1984 ). Water and food sharing occurs more frequently when recipients need water or are deprived of food (Brewis et al, 2019 ; Kause et al, 2018 ; van Dillen et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Any account of BN‐related trade‐offs will again crucially depend on general methodological decisions (see Siebel & Schramme, 2020 ). For example, proponents of needs theories have regarded normative principles as justified based on their own a priori normative intuitions (Wiggins, 1998 ), assumptions about the normative intuitions of ordinary people (Braybrooke, 1987 ; Copp 1995 , 1998 ) and scientific data about these intuitions (Bauer et al., under review ; Brock, 2005 ; Hassoun, 2009 ; Miller 2007 , 2020 ). Personally, I favor drawing at least partly on scientific evidence.…”
