Need for Distinctiveness Leads to Pathological Internet Use? The Perspective of Cognitive Behavioral Model

Abstract: Based on the cognitive behavioral model of pathological Internet use and the gender role theory, this present study investigated the association between the need for distinctiveness and pathological Internet use. Additionally, we explored a mediating role of maladaptive cognition in the association between the need for distinctiveness and pathological Internet use and tested whether the mediation model was moderated by gender. A sample of 745 Chinese university students (Mage = 19.92, SDage = 1.42) was studied… Show more

“…This study indicated that the T1 need for uniqueness was positively associated with T2 NSSI among adolescents, which supported hypothesis H1. The results surprisingly revealed an adverse effect of the need for uniqueness on adolescents’ mental and behavioral problems ( 53 , 74 ), and broadened the research area of the need for uniqueness. Previous research suggested that NSSI was associated with basic psychological need for competence, autonomy, and relatedness ( 16 , 75 ), but few researchers focused on the need for uniqueness.…”

“…Consequently, when these platforms morph into primary sources of gratification, the trajectory towards addiction becomes increasingly plausible. In tandem with UGT, the Cognitive-Behavioral Model of Pathological Internet Use accentuates the interplay between the inherent features of social media platforms and the individual's psychosocial landscape (Zeng et al, 2023;Ede et al, 2023;Malak, 2018). For instance, specific stressors unique to Chinese undergraduates, such as academic pressures and potential social intricacies arising from the one-child policy, may intensify their reliance on social media as coping mechanisms (Zhang, 2021;Alpermann & Yang, 2020).…”

“… 12 The ACE (Anonymity, Convenience, and Escape) theoretical model proposed by Young 13 illustrated that the network had the characteristic of avoidance, and individuals used the network to escape the pressure generated in life. The cognitive-behavioral model of PIU (pathological internet use) proposed by Davis 14 believed that the occurrence of internet addiction behavior was closely related to negative psychological factors. Therefore, people with higher levels of stress were more inclined to use their phones as a way to alleviate negative emotions, thus forming addiction behavior.…”
