Needle Segmentation in Volumetric Optical Coherence Tomography Images for Ophthalmic Microsurgery

Abstract: Needle segmentation is a fundamental step for needle reconstruction and image-guided surgery. Although there has been success stories in needle segmentation for non-microsurgeries, the methods cannot be directly extended to ophthalmic surgery due to the challenges bounded to required spatial resolution. As the ophthalmic surgery is performed by finer and smaller surgical instruments in micro-structural anatomies, specifically in retinal domains, difficulties are raised for delicate operation and sensitive perc… Show more

“…These tasks can be categorized according the precision of the desired outputs. The finest task is tool segmentation (Bodenstedt et al, 2016 Feb-Mar;García-Peraza-Herrera et al, 2016Attia et al, 2017;Lee et al, 2017b;Zhou et al, 2017;Ross et al, 2018;Su et al, 2018). This includes multi-label tool segmentation for articulated tools (Laina et al, 2017): each tool part is associated with one label.…”

“…3(b)). A first step towards instrument tracking in this type of data was recently proposed by Zhou et al [12] in terms of instrument segmentation based on a fully convolution network. The method however requires a volumetric dataset, is not applicable to real-time applications and is restricted to static instruments.…”
