Negative and positive mass spectra of some substituted trinitromethanes

Abstract: The negative and positive ion mass spectra of a series of substituted trinitroalkanes (nitroform, tetranitro methane, methyl, fluoro, chloro, bromo and iodo-trinitro methane) have been measured with an Atlas CH-4 Mass Spectrometer, under varying electron energies from 70 eV over the total range at which ions are produced. The modes of decompostion of the compounds are presented. A few metastable transitions are observable in the negative ion spectra, but only at high electron energies (ion pair region) and are… Show more

“…As depicted inFigure 6afor the positive mode, under the analysis conditions, we only detected a peak at m/z = 157, corresponding to the [4,4'-bipyridin]-1-ium moiety. When analyzing the negative mass spectrum(Figure 6b), and due to the aqueous instability of the trinitromethanide carbanion, different identified [(226: − C(OH)(NO 2 ) 2 CH(NO 2 ) 2 ; 209: − C(NO 2 ) 2 CH(NO 2 ) 2 ] and nonidentified polynitro coupled species were detected[47].…”
