Neoadjuvant chemotherapy for primary sarcoma of the breast: a case report

Abstract: Background Primary sarcoma of the breast is rare. Surgery has been the only curative treatment available. Recently, neoadjuvant chemotherapy including anthracycline/ifosfamide has been reported effective for patients with high-risk sarcomas in a prospective trial. Case presentation A 52-year-old Japanese woman presented with a mass in her left breast. The 10 cm tumor was fixed to her chest wall on examination. “…Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) have similarities with other primary breast sarcomas making diagnosis difficult, unsuspected and misdiagnosed without high clinical suspicion and inmunohistochemistry [ 1 ]. Evaluation includes a physical examination, breast images (mammography/ultrasound/nuclear magnetic resonance), extension studies (usually chest and abdominal tomography), and histological characterization associated with immunohistochemistry due to a wide variety of presentations [ 2 , 3 ].…”

“…Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is often used as an adjuvant intervention in the clinical treatment of breast cancer patients [ 12 , 13 ]. Before tumour resection or local chemoradiotherapy, the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy reduces the lesion volume to a certain extent, and prevents the spread of cancer cells, resulting in a positive effect on subsequent treatments [ 14 , 15 ].…”

“…O rabdomiossarcoma mamário primário bilateral é extremamente raro, dentre todas as neoplasias mamárias o sarcoma da mama é responsável por apenas 0,0006% dos cânceres de mama (MIYAZAKI et al, 2019). Somado a isso, apenas de 2 a 11% de todos os pacientes com câncer de mama, de qualquer tipo histológico, desenvolverão o câncer bilateralmente (HOMSI et al, 2019).…”
