Neodymium Catalyst for the Polymerization of Dienes and Polar Vinyl Monomers

Abstract: Ziegler-Natta catalysts have played a major role in industry for the polymerization of dienes and vinyl monomers. However, due to the deactivation of the catalyst, this system fails to polymerize polar vinyl monomers such as vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, and methyl acrylate. Herein, a catalytic system composed of NdCl ⋅3TEP/TIBA is reported, which promotes a quasi-living polymerization of dienes and is also active for the homopolymerization of polar vinyl monomers. Additionally, this catalytic system gen… Show more

“…This crystal structure has been reported previously. 14,26,27 However, it is worth noting that the reported methods were focused only on growing single crystals for spatial structural analysis. In contrast, our method can easily synthesize the neodymium catalyst in a preparative quantity and high purity.…”

“…In many cases, the halides are present in the catalyst itself, resulting in a binary system (along with the alkylaluminum cocatalyst). These catalysts contain electron donor ligands such as isopropanol, 12 tributyl phosphate, 13 triethyl phosphate, 14,15 and tetrahydrofuran (THF). 16 In other cases, the catalysts do not have any halide atoms coordinated to the metal and require an additional halide source, such as AlEt 2 Cl, forming a ternary catalytic system.…”

“…By comparison of the 1 H NMR spectra, we confirmed the formation of the butyrolactone analogue during the polymerization (Figure 1). With the goal of obtaining the homopolymer in high yields we carried out the polymerization with a catalytic system introduced by our group, NdCl 3 ·3TEP/TIBA, 24 which produced the homopolymer with only <20 mol % transesterified product (Table 1 and Figure 1). With Sn(Oct) 2 and Zn(Undec) 2 , transesterification is more facilitated due to the higher temperatures employed (110 °C).…”
