Neonatal behavior after drug dependent pregnancy.

Abstract: SUMMARY Neurobehavioural development of 35 infants of drug dependent mothers was compared with the development of 37 reference infants as part of a prospective longitudinal research project. Infants of drug dependent mothers had more poor responses than the other children on neurological examination. This difference is significant only when data of infants of drug dependent mothers born at full term are analysed. Two tailed testing indicated that significantly more infants of drug dependent mothers than refere… Show more

“…These children also had significantly lower scores on the Bayley mental and motor developmental indices. In a more recent prospective, longitudinal-matched cohort study, van Baar and colleagues 94 assessed the neurobehavioral development of 35 infants of drug-dependent mothers with the development of 37 nonexposed control infants. Significantly more infants of drugdependent mothers than control children had electroencephalograms rated as suspect or abnormal.…”

“…Methadone causes a higher false-positive or nonreactive rate in the NST particularly if performed 1 to 3 hours after a dose. [92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104] In these instances, a biophysical profile should be performed as a follow-up or primary test. It should be noted that fetal breathing movements also will be decreased as a consequence of methadone.…”

“…The main problem with methadone maintenance treatment during pregnancy is the high incidence of NAS, variably reported between 19% and 80% 5 6 21. NAS is just as likely in preterm infants as in term infants but symptoms may be under-recognised in the former, particularly in units where maternal drug misuse is less common 5…”
