Neoproterozoic–Devonian stratigraphic evolution of the eastern Murzuq Basin, Libya: a tale of tilting in the central Sahara

Abstract: The Murzuq Basin is one of the most petroliferous basins of North Africa. Its remote eastern flank has been largely ignored since early reconnaissance work in the 1950s and 1960s. This article presents new stratigraphic and sedimentological data on the Neoproterozoic through Devonian succession from the Mourizidie and Dor el Gussa regions. The Neoproterozoic to Cambrian Mourizidie and Hasawnah formations in the eastern part of the Mourizidie region dip to the east and north-east, resting directly on late Preca… Show more

“…The preponderance of Skolithos in the first lithofacies bears close comparison to the thick intervals of bioturbated sandstone in the Hawaz Formation at Jabal az‐Zalmah (Le Heron & Howard, ) and on the Gargaf Arch (Ramos et al ., ; De Gibert et al ., ). Close similarities are also noted with the Hawaz Formation at the eastern flank of the Murzuq Basin (Ghienne et al ., ; Le Heron et al ., ). We tentatively interpret the large‐scale composite bedforms as tidal bar deposits.…”

“…Abbo et al (2015), Dorr et al (2015) and Paquette and Le Pennec (2012) suggested that a high proportion of detrital and xenocrystic zircons with 2.5 to 1.0 Ga ages, both in the Tauride and External Hellenides Neoproterozoic meta-sedimentary successions and in Neogene volcanics from the Eastern Mediterranean, reveal the presence of older "hidden" crustal vestiges along the Cadomian realm. This age peak is common in clastic sediments and so could be recycled from other sedimentary successions (Le Heron et al, 2013, 2015. In fact, the source of these old zircons is an enigma.…”

“…A simplified stratigraphic column is shown in Figure 3. Details of the Dor el Gussa stratigraphy are provided in Klitzsch (1964) and Klitzsch & Ziegert (2000), and are summarized in Morton et al (2011) andLe Heron et al (2013).…”
