Abstract: This review describes and discusses unusual axonal structural details and evidence for unmasking sulfhydryl groups (-SH) in axoplasmic membranes resulting from electrical stimulation or asphyxia. Crayfish axons contain fenestrated septa (FS) that, in phase contrast, micrographs appear as repeated striations.
