Net ecosystem productivity and its environmental controls in a mature Scots pine stand in north-western Poland

Abstract: a b s t r a c tAlthough there have been many studies of the net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of different types of forests around the world, the CO 2 dynamics in afforested pine stands of Central Europe are poorly understood. To fill this gap, continuous eddy-covariance (EC) measurements of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) were made from January 2008 to December 2013 in a 62-year-old temperate afforested Scots pine stand near Tuczno. The site is located in north-western Poland, where forests account for almost 30%… Show more

“…This yielded similar results to those obtained with the concentration profile approach [34]. Both ∆SCO 2 and ∆SH 2 O values were accounted for in the final fluxes calculations [35]. Finally, NEE fluxes gapfilling and partitioning into GPP and ecosystem respiration (R eco ) was performed using the "REddyProc" package [30] in the R environment [26], following the Reichstein night-time approach of using the air temperature measured under a canopy at 2 m above ground for the R eco fluxes estimation [31,[36][37][38][39].…”

“…The sample plots were located close to each other and on the same habitats in order to maintain similar tree growth conditions ( Figure 1). The average annual rainfall in this area is 589 mm, the average temperature is 7 • C, and the growing season lasts on average 220 days [49].…”

“…Many of those studies have concentrated on the carbon storage variations [11,13], mechanisms [14], disturbances [15,16] and the capacity of forest environments to foster carbon sequestration [10,17], however, most of these studies have been conducted in tropical, temperate and boreal forest environments [10,15,18]. In spite of the hyper-arid regions being expected to undergo climatic change [4,19], only a few research works have so far been conducted on the dynamics of carbon dioxide fluxes and their responses to bioclimatic factors, due to the presence of the limited carbon flux datasets, especially in water-limited ecosystems [20,21].…”
