Network Embeddedness in Exploration and Exploitation of Joint R&D Projects: A Structural Approach

Abstract: This paper analyses how network embeddedness affects the exploration and exploitation of R&D project performance. By developing joint projects, partners and projects are linked to one another and form a network that generates social capital. We examine how the location, which determines the access to information and knowledge within a network of relationships, affects the performance of projects. We consider this question in the setup of exploration and exploitation projects, using a database built from an EU … Show more

“…Social network analysis (SNA) has been particularly popular among economics and management scholars to study collaboration networks, knowledge spillovers or the development of technologies (Arranz et al, 2020). SNA is an excellent tool for understanding and disentangling the complex relations between different economic actors as it allows the distinguishing of structures in the NIS according to the relations between the system's components, rather than the attributes of individual cases (Newman, 2001;Guan and Zhao, 2013).…”

“…Furthermore, the primary focus of social network theory is on explaining how patterns of social ties produce better economic outcomes and why interorganizational networks are formed, collapse, success, or fail (Echols and Tsai, 2005; Galaskiewicz, 2011). Therefore, social network theory is useful in the analysis of influences of the structural position in facilitating firms’ knowledge creation process (Arranz et al , 2020; Liao and Phan, 2016).…”

“…Studies relations embedded effects on business performance, Mcevily et al [33] think mutual problem solving can help companies acquire tacit knowledge, each other trust and information sharing, in turn, affect the ability of the enterprise and the role of performance, Wu's [34] research also shows that the relationship between the three dimensions of (trust, information sharing and joint problem solving) has a significant influence on incubation performance respectively. From the perspective of structural embedding, Arranz et al [35] found that structural embedding of different dimensions had different effects on project performance, and Mandakini et al [36] concluded that network density and centrality had positive effects on enterprise performance. From the perspective of start-up stage, when a start-up enterprise is in its initial stage, its performance is significantly affected by local network embedding.…”
