This paper introduces a new robotic smart house, Intelligent Sweet Home, developed at KAIST in Korea, which is based on several robotic agents and aims at testing advanced concepts for independent living of the elderly and people with disabilities. The work focuses on technical solutions for human-friendly assistance in motion/mobility and advanced human-machine interfaces that provide simple control of all assistive robotic systems and home-installed appliances. The smart house concept includes an intelligent bed, intelligent wheelchair, and robotic hoist for effortless transfer of the user between bed and wheelchair. The design solutions comply with most of the users' requirements and suggestions collected by a special questionnaire survey of people with disabilities. The smart house responds to the user's commands as well as to the recognized intentions of the user. Various interfaces, based on hand gestures, voice, body movement, and posture, have been studied and tested. The paper describes the overall system structure and

Paradigms and techniques that have bloomed in the area of the pervasive computing are general and pertinent. Environments with loosely coupled computational hosts, running heterogeneous hardware and software, associating one another in a just-in-time manner are characteristic of pervasive computing. Pervasive computational environments, such as our future homes are a prominent example of this tendency. In this paper, we present a review of the state of the art of pervasive middleware platforms for enabling a smart home. There are numerous projects carried out by industry and academic research groups to examine embedded middleware platforms for smart homes. There are projects that consider problems ranging from software to hardware issues of smart home technology and associated issues of privacy, security, and social concerns. These projects emphasize numerous functional and non-functional requirements of a smart house. We discuss stimulating and valuable projects in the literature that addressed some of the concerns that are at the basis of the middleware platform proposal. We consider two aspects during the overview of the state of the art. First, we review a number of existing and recently funded research projects that focus on pervasive embedded middleware platforms. Second, we look at pervasive methodologies and technologies that are relevant to the middleware platform.

This paper describes the development of generic Human-Machine Interface (HMI) to control the manus assistive robot. The personalization of the HMI, according to each end user, is crucial for the usability of any assistive technology. The control of complex devices, such as robot having many degrees of freedom (DOF), with a limited number of DOF at the level of the user, implies an appropriate design of the HMI to facilitate the interaction. Our research activities focus mainly at this level, which means not only providing several functionalities of the controlled system, but also on the presentation of those functionalities to the user. The challenge is to hide the complexity of any controlled system to the user, and particularly, when these users are having severe disabilities. Preliminay results are also presented. This work is funded by a European program, through the AMOR project, and by national support, through the Smart Home project. A demonstration of the running prototype will be presented during the conference.
