Neural Relation Extraction on Wikipedia Tables for Augmenting Knowledge Graphs

Abstract: Knowledge Graph Augmentation is the task of adding missing facts to an incomplete knowledge graph to improve its effectiveness in applications such as web search and question answering. State-ofthe-art methods rely on information extraction from running text, leaving rich sources of facts such as tables behind. We help close this gap with a neural method that uses contextual information surrounding a table in a Wikipedia article to extract relations between entities appearing in the same row of a table or betw… Show more

“…Besides Wikipedia, we want to apply the approach to wikis in the Fandom 17 universe containing more than 380k wikis on various domains (among them many interesting wikis for our approach, like for example WikiLists 18 ). For background knowledge, we plan to rely on existing knowledge graphs in this domain like DBkWik [12] or TiFi [3].…”

“…Oulabi and Bizer [21] tackle the same problem for Wikipedia tables with a bootstrapping approach based on expert-defined rules. Macdonald and Barbosa [17] extract new facts from Wikipedia tables to extend the Freebase knowledge base. With an LSTM that uses contextual information of the table, they extract new facts for 28 relations.…”

“…While those techniques focus on identifying the semantic types of individual columns, there is another line of work that focused on column relations between pairs of columns in the same table for better understanding tables [4,12,23,24,28,46]. A column relation is a semantic label between a pair of columns in a table, which offers more fine-grained information about the table.…”

“…Then, word combinations with the extracted partof-speech compositions were extracted. As data accumulates on wikipedia, various studies using the data are being conducted [15], [16], [17]. In this study, it was used to determine whether the text extracted through wikiapi is an existing term. After examining whether there was a Wikipedia page for the extracted word combination using wikiapi, the corresponding terms were extracted.…”
