Neuroergonomics Applied in Engineering to Test Lighter and Comfortable Materials for Wheelchair’ Users

Abstract

With the advent of the digital era, intelligent machines demand an updated profile of the workforce. Reduced mobility is no longer a limitation and, in addition to accessibility and individual movement, the wheelchair has the important function of helping with socialization. The objective of this research is to disseminate and apply neuroergonomic principles in engineering to test materials that can be used in the construction of wheelchairs, validating, using virtual tests, lighter and more comfortable materials for wheelchair users. The methodology adopted related bibliographical research inherent to the topic and use specialized software to test three different materials. The result shows that there are materials that offer excellent mechanical properties and are lighter and easier to handle. It is concluded that manufacturers need to review the materials used in the manufacture of wheelchairs as well as apply neuroergonomic principles in the manufacture of new models of wheelchairs that require less effort in locomotion and improve the posture of users
