Beads of alginate montmorillonite have been used as sorbent for polychlorinated biphenyls from aqueous solutions. The structure and the differences between the different beads were established by IR spectroscopy (FT-IR). The adsorption at 25°C has been studied in a batch system, following its kinetics and assessing adsorbent dose, initial PCB concentrations, and pH effects. The results show that increasing the initial concentration of the PCBs and the adsorption time favored the adsorption. Adsorption isotherm data were modeled using Chapman, Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms and the appropriate parameters were calculated. Adsorption of trichlorobiphenyls on alginate-montmorillonite beads followed a Freundlich isotherm type model, while adsorption of tetra-, penta-, and hexachlorobiphenyls displayed a sigmoid-shaped (S-type) isotherm fitting the Chapman sigmoidal equation with the highest non-linear R 2 values among the three tested models. By comparing the percentage adsorptions using the same number of beads (same volumes), best removals were obtained by using alginate montmorillonite beads. Kinetic models were investigated to determine the mechanism of adsorption showing a best fit for the pseudosecond order model (R 2 from 0.998 to 0.982). Moreover, to underline the effect of montmorillonite in alginate gel beads, we have compared the isothermal adsorption curves between alginate montmorillonite and alginate beads.

A B S T R A C TPesticides are a major source of environmental concern due to their persistence and health and ecological impacts, particularly in developing countries. Heterogeneous photocatalysis has emerged as a promising technique for their removal from wastewaters. But effective implementation requires the development of efficient and practical photocatalytic systems. A novel photo reactor was developed in this study using TiO 2 -coated polymeric beads as floating catalysts which enabled efficient penetration of UV radiation; good mixing and high mass transfer rates. The performance of the immobilised bead photo reactor was evaluated for the removal of an organophosphate pesticide-monocrotophos. Batch studies were carried out using a 2 3 central composite factorial design of experiments, with initial pesticide concentration (1-15 mg/l), initial pH (3.5-10.5), and catalyst loading (2-6 g/l) as process variables. About 50-80% degradation was achieved depending on the levels of initial pesticide concentration, pH, and the amount of catalyst. A quadratic polynomial model was fitted to the experimental removal efficiency and the statistical analysis revealed that the coefficients for the main effects are significant.

Abstract. The iron-containing materials with an iron content of 40 mg/g and 52.5 mg/g, a specific surface area of 107 m 2 /g and 96 m 2 /g are developed on the basis of natural layered aluminosilicate (montmorillonite) and polyhydroxo complexes of iron. It is shown that the materials exhibit high catalytic activity in the photo-oxidation of dye "Methyl Green". The influence of physicochemical parameters (loading of the catalyst, a ratio of initial concentrations [H 2 O 2 ]/[MG] on the efficiency of the dye photo-oxidation was established. The optimum conditions, which made it possible to achieve high mineralization and 100 % the dye oxidation efficiency were determined: the catalyst loading equal to 1.0 g/l and the ratio of [H 2 O 2 ] and [MG] equal to stoichiometric ratio (55 mol/mol). The decrease of the total organic carbon content after photo-oxidation reaction was 56.5%. The average value of the quantum yield of the dye photo-oxidation was to 0.30 mol/Einstein. The results of the conducted research show that the developed iron-containing materials are the promising catalysts for photo-Fenton processes of oxidative degradation of organic compounds. The materials are of interest for use in wastewater treatment processes from toxic organic pollutants.
