“…The study showed that the extract of U. chamae was effective in neutralizing the lethality and the effects of Naja nigricollis venom in animals. Several workers have studied the ability of plants as well as their purified fractions to inhibit biological activities of snake venoms (Melo et al, 1994;Maiorano et al, 2005;Oliveira et al, 2005;Cavalcante et al, 2007;Lomonte et al, 2009;Depaula et al, 2010). However, only a few have investigated the neutralizing mechanism of their action.…”

“…A very promising avenue is the possibility of using natural or synthetic inhibitors of venom toxins, such as inhibitors of phospholipases A 2 , metalloproteinases and hyaluronidases, for blocking the action of tissue-damaging toxins by rapidly administering these inhibitors directly on the site of venom injection Lomonte et al, 2009;Perales et al, 2005). Such possibility has been tested, with excellent results, at the preclinical level in mouse models (Borkow et al, 1997;Lomonte et al, 2009;Rucavado et al, 2000;Yingprasertchai et al, 2003). It is necessary to identify and develop inhibitors, some of which may be already in use for other pathologies, and to test them at the preclinical and clinical levels.…”

“…Several plants have been used in folk medicine throughout the world as treatment against snakebites (Houghton and Osibogun., 1993;Melo et al, 1994;Maiorano et al, 2005;Oliveira et al, 2005;Cavalcante et al, 2007;Lomonte et al, 2009;De Paula et al, 2010;Omale et al, 2013). Till date few plants materials have been evaluated in well controlled assays and only a few of them have been found to be effective against Snake envenomation.…”
