Neutrino electromagnetic interactions: A window to new physics

Abstract: We review the theory and phenomenology of neutrino electromagnetic interactions, which give us powerful tools to probe the physics beyond the Standard Model. After a derivation of the general structure of the electromagnetic interactions of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos in the one-photon approximation, we discuss the effects of neutrino electromagnetic interactions in terrestrial experiments and in astrophysical environments. We present the experimental bounds on neutrino electromagnetic properties and we confr… Show more

“…The development of our knowledge about neutrino masses and mixing [1][2][3] provides a basis for exploring neutrino properties and interactions beyond the standard model (BSM). In this respect, the study of nonvanishing electromagnetic characteristics of massive neutrinos is of particular interest [4][5][6]. It can help not only to shed light on whether neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles, but also to constrain the existing BSM theories and/or to hint at new physics.…”

“…[23,24], and a complete review on the neutrino electromagnetic properties can be found in Ref. [25]. Although our limit is more stringent then the ones established from modifications of the neutrino cross section and is comparable to the astrophysical one, it is a combined limit of the neutrino magnetic moment with both the solar magnetic field profile and the characteristics of its random fluctuations.…”
