Neutrino non-standard interactions meet precision measurements of Neff

Abstract: The number of relativistic species, Neff, has been precisely calculated in the standard model, and would be measured to the percent level by CMB-S4 in future. Neutral-current non-standard interactions would affect neutrino decoupling in the early Universe, thus modifying Neff. We parameterize those operators up to dimension-7 in the effective field theory framework, and then provide a complete, generic and analytical dictionary for the collision term integrals. From precision measurements of Neff, the most str… Show more

“…NSIs can give observable effects in the production, propagation, and detection of neutrinos, and so the relevant coefficients can be probed at neutrino detectors [196][197][198][199][200][201][202]. Using the approach introduced in Refs.…”

“…In general, these new couplings can be flavor-preserving αα and/or flavor-violating αβ with α = β and α, β = {e, µ, τ } being the lepton flavor indices. Searches of these new neutrino interactions are relevant since they may affect neutrino oscillations [114] and even other physics branches like cosmology [115] or astrophysics [12,116]. NSIs in their original definition can be studied since they enter the SM CEνNS cross section via a modified or an additional weak nuclear charge [29,30,32].…”

“…The collision-term integral has been extensively studied since the 1990s [47][48][49][50][51] for neutrino physics as it is essential for a precise prediction of the effective number of neutrino species in the early universe. Based on these previous efforts, we briefly show the our strategy for numerically calculating the collision terms needed in this work in this appendix.…”
