New approach for describing nuclear reactions based on intra-nuclear cascade coupled with DWBA

Abstract: We proposed a new nuclear reaction model in combination of Intra-Nuclear Cascade of Liège (INCL) and the Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) calculation, and incorporated it into the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS). This model was applied to deuteron induced reactions on nat Li and 9 Be targets for deuteron incident energies of 40 and 18 MeV, respectively. Double-differential cross sections and neutron yields on thick targets obtained by PHITS using the model reproduce experimental da… Show more

“…Improvements in the nuclear reaction models, particularly for lighter systems such as p-Li reactions, are also necessary, because the models currently implemented in PHITS cannot consider the shell effect, which plays an important role in simulating nuclear reactions involving lighter nuclei. For this purpose, development of a new nuclear reaction model has been initiated by combining an intranuclear cascade model and a distorted-wave Born approximation calculation [64]. This model will be incorporated in a future version of PHITS.…”

“…Furthermore, discrete peaks appearing in the high energy region of the spectrum are included in the DWBA results; these peaks correspond to transitions between a ground state of target nuclei and a ground or excited state of a residual nucleus. This method was applied to reproduce the neutron spectrum in deuteron-induced reactions on Li and Be at 40 and 18 MeV, respectively [14]. The results obtained by using the method were found to be in good agreement with experimental data for thin and thick targets.…”

“…Small deviations at this angle can be attributed to the omission of another j or l component. As in the 9 Be case, detailed analyses of ground and excited states of 14 N are required to improve the DWBA calculation.…”

“…The elastic break-up of the deuteron, whereby the deuteron splits into a neutron and a proton in the Coulomb and nuclear potential of the target nucleus (which remains in the ground state), has also been approached within the distorted-wave Born approximation, employing the aforementioned OPMs. While for stripping to discrete levels it has been necessary to fit OPM parameters [20] to available experimental data, for elastic break-up the calculation relies on standard OPM parametrizations without additional fits.…”
