New Approach for Sewage Sludge Stabilization with Ozone

Abstract: Due to a variety of physicochemical properties of the sewage sludge the selection of proper methods for its stabilization is difficult. In this work, the effect of ozone treatment on physico-chemical and microbiological parameters of sludge was investigated. Ozonation was carried out using a counter-current bed reactor, which ensures optimal mass transfer and the contact time of ozone with excessive sediment. The ozonation process was carried out for 15, 30, 45 and 60 min at an ozone concentration of 90–110 pp… Show more

“…The sludge treated with ozone had an improved sedimentation performance, which had a favorable effect on the separation of mud and water. The gaseous ozone oxidizing agent means that the oxidization process does not affect the effluent quality and has the function of disinfection . In addition, it can effectively oxidize the heavy metals and realize the detoxification of the sludge.…”

“…The resulting solid and significantly stable product can be easily and safely transported outside the WWTP for further treatment or final disposal. Recently, ozonation and other advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as Peroxone, have attracted attention for the chemical stabilization and reduction in RMSS and as a pretreatment prior to the biological stabilization of RMSS [146][147][148][149][150][151][152][153][154].…”

“…Aerobic stabilization is a common method because of the high water and organic matter content. After aerobic stabilization and pressing, waste sludge still contains a significant amount of water, 70-75% (Bianchini et al, 2015), which makes it unstable and increases transport costs (Kosowski et al, 2020). The composition of stabilized sludge is difficult to define because wastewater properties are variable and, additionally, sludge is a mixture from different phases of wastewater treatment.…”
