New Approach to a Rotating Ring Disk Electrode

Abstract: The mechanism of the oxidation of water by photogenerated holes in an n-type semiconductor was elucidated by using a rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) with n-TiO2 as a disk. The heterogeneous electrode process was found to be hydrox3~] radical (OH*) formation. Hydrogen peroxides were produced in solution by the homogeneous second-order chemical reaction of hydroxyl radicals. The rate constant k2 for OH* + OH* k2 H~O2 was found to be 1.5 • 1011 M 1 s-1 (1 tool 1 s-l) on the basis of a model that is developed … Show more

“…For higher methanol concentrations, direct oxidation of methanol by photogenerated holes occurs at the TiO 2 surface. In general, it remains unclear whether photooxidation of solution species proceeds via direct interfacial transfer of holes [42,43] or involves the reaction with photogenerated hydroxyl radicals at the 2-fold coordinated oxygen as intermediate step [44,45].…”

“…The RDE is a convective electrode system for which the convective-diffusion equation has been rigorously solved at the steady-state condition. 28,29 The major advantage of the RDE technique is that the construction of the electrochemical cell is rather simple irrespective of the electrode materials. The RDE just consists of a disc of the electrode material imbedded in a rod of an insulating material.…”
