New approach to detecting counterfeit drugs in tablets by DART mass spectrometry

Abstract: The possibility of using DART mass spectrometry for the identification of active ingredients in tableted drugs has been studied. Analytical results for some drugs such as glycin, nootropyl, anaprilin, mexidol, and biseptol are presented. The benefits and limitations of DART mass spectrometry as applied to fast screening of tableted pharmaceuticals for detecting counterfeits are discussed.

“…Moreover, about 82% of the bags contained medicines that in spite of being sold to pregnant women are contraindicated in pregnancy. Other examples on the application of DART MS to the screening for falsied drugs have been reported by Helmy et al (etoricoxib), 55 Samms et al (alprazolam), 11 Chernetsova et al (glycin, nootropyl, anaprilin, mexidol, and biseptol), 56 and Moffat et al (tadalal). 57 In forensic investigations of falsied pharmaceuticals requiring identication and identity validation of unknown components, the use of multiple complementary analytical methods is oen necessary.…”

“…Areas of interest for the forensic drug applications of DART have included screening for THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) or its derivatives, synthetic cannabinoids, and cannabimimetics (Blackledge, ; Musah et al, ,; Takahashi et al, ; Duvivier et al, ; Jacobs & Steiner, ; Lesiak et al, ); detecting adulterations and contaminants in drugs (Fernández et al, ; Newton et al, ,; Nyadong et al, ; Chernetsova et al, ; Samms et al, ; Zhou et al, ; Vaclavik, Krynitsky, & Rader, ); determining the nature or amount of the active ingredient in various known drugs or unknown pharmaceutical samples (Cody, Laramee, & Durst, ; Ropero‐Miller et al, ; Howlett & Steiner, ; Likar et al, ; Lesiak et al, , ; Easter & Steiner, ; Musah et al, ; Kuki et al, ); identifying synthetic precursors to drugs of abuse (Steiner, ); and detecting drug residues on surfaces, in fingerprints, or in liquid matrices (Cody, Laramee, & Durst, ; Blackledge, ; Bennett & Steiner, ; Grange & Sovocool, ; Lim et al, ).…”

“…The traditional GC/MS method combined with preliminary derivatization has been employed for analysis of active substances and impurities in pharmaceutical substances. However, the possibilities of using DART mass spectrometry 206,207 and DESI 208 for the same purposes have also been investigated. On the basis of ESI-MS, a highly sensitive method has been developed that allows quantitative determination of antiarrhythmic drugs in blood plasma without preliminary chromatographic separation.…”
