New aspect for systemic effects of COPD: eye findings

Abstract: The results of this study showed increasing diameter of the retinal veins, thinning of the RNFL, and SFCT may be associated to chronic inflammation and hypoxia in subjects with COPD. Future guidelines may include ocular findings to the present systemic manifestations of COPD.

“…The new role of OCT in diseases with chronic hypoxemia has been defined in many studies . Measurements of RNFL thickness and ganglion cell layer analysis are suggested to be used during the follow up of cases with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, which can predict a neurodegenerative process in retina during the disease …”

“…7,14,15 Measurements of RNFL thickness and ganglion cell layer analysis are suggested to be used during the follow up of cases with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, which can predict a neurodegenerative process in retina during the disease. 14 Physiological response of circulating leukocytes to stress factors is an increase in numbers of neutrophils and a relatively lower count of lymphocytes and the ratio between these two subgroups (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio-NLR) has been recently used to monitor the process of inflammation in many diseases such as lung cancer, colorectal cancer, end-stage renal disease and acute coronary syndrome. [16][17][18][19][20][21][22] Calculating NLR is easy and rapid since only complete blood count is needed.…”

“…The study did not observe an association between retinal vessel calibre and choroidal thickness on the one hand and COPD severity on the other hand, but the sample size was relatively small and more than half of the patient had severe COPD, while no patients had mild COPD (Ugurlu et al. ).…”

“…Ugurlu and coworkers reported no significant difference in choroid thickness between a group of male COPD patients and male controls (Ugurlu et al. ). In addition, they also compared the diameter of the retinal vessels, which may have an independent role in cardiovascular risk prediction.…”
