In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in producing new materials that use renewable resources and halogen-free flame retardants with nonleaching properties. This research focuses on designing and synthesizing phosphorus-nitrogen-based biopolyols for use in polyurethane (PU) foam production. Polyol (ESBO-DYM) with dual functionalities, renewability, and nonflammability is synthesized through the epoxy ring-opening reaction of epoxidized soybean oil with phosphorus and nitrogen-containing tetraol products (DYM). The mechanical and flame retardant properties of PU foams with the addition of an ESBO-DYM were investigated. Increasing the amount of phosphorus in the PU foams increased the thermal stability properties. Using 100% ESBO-DYM as a polyol in the foam formulation increased the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value to 22.9% and resulted in the highest char yield according to the thermal gravimetric analysis (17% at 600 °C). Additionally, the introduction of ESBO-DYM polyol into the formulation resulted in a decrease in the compression strength of the foams. The foam density decreased as the amount of ESBO-DYM polyol in the formulation increased. The foam with the highest amount of ESBO-DYM had a foam density of 29.1 kg/m 3 . The morphology of the foams was characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result of this study, flame retardant polyurethane foams were formulated using a renewable source, polyol, along with commercial compounds.

Polyurethane and rare-earth materials: a review

Polyurethanes are polymers produced from polyols and isocyanates. Commonly, aiming to modify physicochemical properties of the resulting material, other chemical species can be introduced in the polymeric structure, modifying its mechanical, thermal and electronic characteristics and conferring more stability and resistance to external factors. The rare earth chemical elements, composed of lanthanides, Y and Sc, can give the materials such improved characteristics, and are still less researched when compared to other chemical elements. In the present study, a systematic search was carried out on the Web of Science platform. No studies were identified with polyurethanes and Sc, Pr, Pm, Sm, Dy and Ho, showing room for unexplored studies. Most of the articles investigated the luminescent characteristics of the chemical elements that were used, but it was also possible to notice trends in changing mechanical and thermal properties.

Phosphine oxides are an interesting class of compounds possessing tetracoordinate and pentavalent phosphorus atoms and have been employed in a wide range of applications including reagents in organic synthesis, metal extractants, flame retardants, pharmaceuticals, and bioactivity studies. Among all, the degree of basicity of phosphoryl oxygen driven by the nature of substituents influences the electronic properties of the central metal in a complex toward the diversified catalytic processes. Further, the presence of heteroatoms adjacent to the central phosphorus atom enhances the nucleophilicity of the phosphoryl oxygen atom. In view of this, the present review covers the past two decades of remarkable catalytic versatility of P=O‐based metal complexes and describes the governing factors influencing the structural properties and the resultant coordination behavior. Interestingly, some of the P=O bond distances of metal complexes are either longer or shorter compared to their free ligands, indicating the catalytic activity. These complexes can effectively catalyze a wide range of chemical reactions including polymerizations, C‐C and Si‐C bond activations, oxidation, reduction, hydroformylation, hydrophosphination, hydrogenation and cyclization reactions. Furthermore, this review emphasizes the impact of substituents, solvents, additives, light, and temperature on the catalytic efficiency.
