New Chemistry for the Placement of Chromium(III)/Polymer Gels in High-Temperature Reservoirs

Abstract: Summary Coordination chemistry concepts have been used in the development of Cr+3/polymer solutions that meet the delayed-gelation requirements for in-depth treatment of high-temperature reservoirs. Use of the malonate complex of Cr+3, Cr(malonate)3, provides gelation delays at elevated temperature much greater than those obtained with either the hydrated Cr+3 ion or Cr(acetate)3. Inclusion of additional, uncomplexed malonate ions in the formulations provides a means for further, and predicta… Show more

“…In this study, the gelation time was studied by viscometer methods (Terry et al, 1981;Jordan et al, 1982;Lockhart and Albonico, 1994;Natarajan et al, 1998;Al-Muntasheri et al, 2006). The gel solution characteristics are presented as function of polymer concentration, polymer/cross-linker ratio, salt type and concentration, temperature, initial pH of polymer gel solution, or water used in the preparation of the gelant.…”

“…Both polymers were delivered in an aqueous solution. During the laboratory experiments, Chromium (III) acetate was used as the cross linker, as reported in a number of earlier studies in the literature [16]. The supplier recommended composition of the crosslinker was 50,000ppm.…”

“…Lockhart and Albonico (1992) desmibe a chromium~] malonate gel system which provides longer delays at high temperatures (194"F-275"F). Laboratory data indicate gelation times can be delayed more than an order of magnitude longer and that gelation times are easily controlled and predictable.…”
