New clinical method for measuring the rate of gastric emptying: the double sampling test meal.

Abstract: A resurgence of interest in gastric emptying has developed, due mainly to its possible aetiological significance in gastric ulceration. Many techniques have been used to measure the rate of emptying but few clinical methods, which determine both the rate and pattein of gastric evacuation, are available.Radiological methods do not determine the pattern and their accuracy in measuring the end point has been questioned (Hunt and Spurrell, 1951;Horton, Ross, and Darling, 1965). The method using radioactive chromiu… Show more

“…An orogastric tube (Salem 14G) was inserted just after tracheal intubation to measure gastric pH using a previously calibrated pHmeter (Radiometer priM 82) and residual gastric volume (RGV) using the phenol red dilutional indicator technique. 8 Recovery times were measured from the cessation of N20 inhalation. Assessment of immediate recovery included time to eye opening on verbal command (TEo) and time to identify the date and location ('FOR).…”

“…The amount of PEG (originally ingested with the meal) remaining in the stomach at 30, 60, and 180 min after the meal was calculated from the PEG concentration of the gastric contents multiplied by the estimated gastric volume. Gastric volume at 30 and 60 min was measured by a nonabsorbable marker dilution method similar to that reported by George (11 (12). All samples were tested in duplicate in the same assay.…”

“…Primeiramente, esta técnica fornece apenas o valor do volume gástrico residual obtido após um determinado tempo 23 . Isso gera um problema, pois, para que se tenha uma curva da resposta do indivíduo, é necessária a realização de vários testes no sujeito.…”
