New Constraint on the Local Relic Neutrino Background Overdensity with the First KATRIN Data Runs

Abstract: The precision measurement of the tritium β-decay spectrum performed by the KATRIN experiment provides a unique way to search for general neutrino interactions (GNI). All theoretical allowed GNI terms involving neutrinos are incorporated into a low-energy effective field theory, and can be identified by specific signatures in the measured tritium β-spectrum. In this paper an effective description of the impact of GNI on the β-spectrum is formulated and the first constraints on the effective GNI parameters are d… Show more

“…Thierry Lasserre points out that large-enough overdensities can be potentially observable with the 𝛽-decay experiment KATRIN exploiting again the (relic) neutrino capture process over tritium. Albeit only sensitive to very large overdensity values, KATRIN has already improved previous bounds by two orders of magnitude [20].…”

“…The NP can manifest itself in the measured spectrum in several ways, e.g. a kink-like spectral feature (heavy sterile neutrinos [48]), a shape distortion (exotic weak interactions, light sterile neutrinos or new light bosons [49]), the appearance of a line feature (relic neutrino capture [50]), or a sidereal modulation of the fit parameters (LIV [51]).…”

“…Polarizing tritium targets in PTOLEMY, as explored in [32], would make it sensitive to the incoming direction of the neutrinos, 3 possibly allowing the study of CNB anisotropies in the future. Within this context, we also utilize our simulations to explore how the number densities vary across the sky and how these anisotropies compare to those resulting from evolving primordial 1 An upper limit on the neutrino number density is given by KATRIN [20], which is many orders of magnitudes above the cosmological average of ∼56cm −3 . The conceivability of such values is discussed in [21].…”
