New data on introduced and rare synanthropic spider species (Arachnida: Araneae) in Poland (II)

Abstract: Over the last decades, a large number of introduced spider species (Araneae) has been noted in Europe. Some of these newcomers have been introduced incidentally. However, the others develop permanent populations, for example in greenhouses or botanical gardens, and become synanthropic species. Introduction and synanthropization of new spider species also occurs in Poland. New records presented herein extend the list of introduced arachnofauna by seven species: Aphantaulax trifasciata, Cheiracanthium furculatum… Show more

“…They prey on a wide range of invertebrates including other spider species, but only for a few species a high density in natural habitats has been reported. Such examples are the linyphiids Mermessus trilobatus and Ostearius melanopygius (Ruzicka 1995;Rozwalka et al 2013) whereas in most cases evidence is merely anecdotal. Therefore, due to lack of data no further conclusion on the overall effect In a few cases more than one pathway was reported and they were counted separately.…”

“…The current arachnid survey marks the first time that specimens of T. stenaspis were collected from the Netherlands. This oonopid spider of African origin was to be expected, as it was collected from several other greenhouses in Europe (Korenko et al 2007, Pfliegler 2014, Rozwałka et al 2016, Šestáková et al 2017, Rembold et al 2020, Lissner & Scharff 2021. Furthermore, T. stenaspis was recently recorded at a tropical butterfly house (in Whipsnade Zoo, England) in which the trees and shrubs all originate from the Netherlands (Telfer 2020).…”

“…As a consequence of accidental introductions, some species may start new populations, which is a threat to local biodiversity (Hulme 2009). They could also invade hot, human-made places, such as bakeries, houses, or underground electric railroad, as is the case of Acheta domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758), known as the "grillon du métro" in Paris.…”
